gPotato was an online free-to-play game portal and publisher operated by Gala-Net, hosting MMO and casual titles; its accounts were later migrated to the Webzen portal.
A game portal holds player identity and contact data, dates of birth, gender, IP addresses, physical addresses, security questions and answers, and account passwords.
The breach dates to 2007 and was discovered/surfaced in 2016 after accounts had been migrated to Webzen.com.
The old breach resurfaced in 2016, adding aged but still-reusable credentials and security-answer data to the circulating corpus.
• Credential stuffing against reused passwords across other platforms | • Identity verification bypass using name + date of birth combination | • Targeted phishing campaigns using exposed email addresses | • Doxxing risk from physical address exposure
A consumer-service breach: contact and account data supports phishing, account takeover and profile enrichment. For a high-profile principal this is targeting-grade, not merely identity-theft-grade: the combination lets an adversary locate, impersonate, or pressure the principal with little additional work.
