The annotations
to JFK's Arithmetic.
A novel about measurement, selection and the arithmetic that decides what a population is allowed to notice. The novel carries short explanations where a reader meets something real. These are the longer versions of those explanations, and each one stands on its own for anyone who arrives without the book.
A page in the novel opens a note. The note opens one of these.
The material inside this rule belongs to the book. Everything outside it is ObscureIQ, writing about the parts of the story that are not fiction: what was actually built, what it actually did, and what is being claimed here versus what is not.
Simulmatics: The Machine Before the Machine
Before behavioral targeting, recommendation algorithms and predictive analytics, a small company tried to turn American voters into a computable system.
JA-02 · Annotation 02Vietnam by Dashboard: When Measurement Became the War
An attempt to make an entire contested society computationally legible, and what happened when the summary began to disagree with the conditions underneath it.
JA-03 · Annotation 03The Editor Is Arithmetic: What Happens When Selection Becomes Automatic
Scarcity created editors. Abundance automated them. The question is no longer what everyone should see.
JA-04 · Annotation 04The First Seventeen Minutes: Narrative Capture Before the Facts Arrive
Seventeen minutes is fictional. The vulnerability it dramatizes is not.
Why a protective intelligence firm is publishing a novel's footnotes
Because the novel is about a problem this firm works on. Measurement that becomes the thing measured. Selection that decides what is seen without deciding what is true. An explanation that arrives before the evidence and is still standing when the evidence catches up.
Those are not literary devices here. They are the mechanics of how a person gets targeted, and of why a correction rarely reaches the people who saw the accusation.
